Is depression a disability?

I have been diagnosed with depression and panic attacks. I have been placed on 2 different kinds of meds. One kind is to help me focus and not be so depressed all of the time. The second one is to help me sleep better at night. I have lost 2 jobs due to my illness, and now I’m looking for some kind of help to support myself threw these troubling times for me. I want to get disability, but i wasnt sure if this was a disability issue. Can you please help…..thanks in advance!!

NO.
Depression is all mental. Just don’t be depressed.
Missing a foot is a disability - whining about being depressed is NOT………
yes. fucking emo.
I dont think depression is a disability, if it was - I’m sure alot of people would take advantage of it.
Depression is a nutritional disorder.
Depression is debilating and you seem proof. I am not sure that is reason to get disability however. But if you ask me they give disability to many of the wrong people then those that truly need it get denied. That stinks. IF you need a job for some income to pay the bills then might I suggest starting at your local welfare or unemployment office. Someone there at either building might have the ideas about how you can get hired, or what kind of place would suit you best.
I am stuggling with depression myself. Being unemployed although terribly broke has done more to lift my spirits than anything else has been able to do.
Depending on the severity of your depression it can be considered a disability and you would be entitled to disability benefits. If you are unable to keep a job because of depression then you should qualify. You can apply or find out more about disability benefits on the social security website.
Depression is absolutely a reason to receive disability. If it interfere with your life and ability to work, then it is a ‘disability’. Depression is NOT just in your head. It can, and often is, caused by chemical imbalances. Even after the imbalances are corrected, it can take a while for the behavioral side of it to change. Once a person has depression for an extended period of time, they modify how they behave, and therefore need to learn a new way of being. This can take some time.
I would consult a disability attorney who does work pro-bono. I will also warn you that even though severe depression is a reason to receive disability benefits, it can be an uphill battle. Most more than likely they will deny your initiall claim. But most of the time will approve it on appeal.
Please don’t listen to those who say depression is all in your head, etc, etc. They have no idea what they are talking about and only display their own ignorance and intolerance by bothering to post answers like that.
As you know, depression is an incredibly disabling illness, with a physical cause and physical, mental and emotional symptoms, however I wasn’t sure when I first read your question whether or not those suffering from the disease are actually entitled under law for disability payments. From what I can see from some quick research, it really depends on where you live. I suggest you go to Centrelink (if you are Australian) or whatever the equavalent of that is in the country that you are in. Also, ask the doctor who prescribes your meds.
Here’s an interesting article I stumbed across as I was looking:
Best wishes.
Yes. I have two friends who are bipolar who are on disability. I was told by more than one doctor and psych that I should apply for disability because of my depression. I am currently doing so.
Are you located in Canada? The criteria might be different in different countris or provinces. Anyone know this?
